Where Do You Read Best? Exploring Sensory-Friendly Spaces

Have you ever noticed that where you read can make a huge difference to how much you enjoy it? The environment around us can either support our reading or make it feel like hard work. As a neurodivergent adult, I’ve learned that meeting my sensory needs is just as important as choosing the right book.

For me, reading in a totally quiet space with no movement feels like a big demand. It makes reading harder and less enjoyable. But when my sensory needs are supported, I can lose myself in a book much more easily.

Here are some of my favourite places to read:

  • 🌿 In my hammock or egg chair – the gentle rocking movement helps me stay calm and focused.
  • 🏊 By the swimming pool – after a swim, when my body has had movement, I find it easier to sit and read.
  • ☕ In a café – the background noise and busy atmosphere actually help me concentrate and focus.
  • 🤲 While fiddling with something or chewing gum – keeping my hands or mouth busy supports my concentration for reading.
  • 🌞 Outside in the fresh air – when the weather allows, being outdoors helps me feel relaxed and connected while I read.

Everyone’s sensory needs are different, which means everyone’s ideal reading environment will look different too. Some people love complete quiet, others need background sounds. Some need movement, while others prefer stillness.

I’d love to encourage you to reflect on your own sensory needs. Ask yourself:

  • Do I focus better with noise, or in silence?
  • Does movement (like rocking, walking, or fidgeting) help me concentrate?
  • Do I enjoy reading more indoors or outdoors?
  • What sensory tools (like fidgets, chewy gum, or weighted blankets) help me feel comfortable?

Experiment with different environments and see how it changes your reading experience. Meeting your sensory needs might just help you discover a new level of enjoyment in reading.

Because reading isn’t just about the book in your hands – it’s about the whole experience of being comfortable, connected, and yourself.

I’m Hayley

As an independent Occupational Therapist in North Hertfordshire, I believe that reading is a valued occupation. Stories, knowledge, and words can bring joy, spark learning, and most importantly, help us feel connected to ourselves and to each other.

I created this Little Free Library for Neurodiverse Minds to give back to my local community, and to create a welcoming space where books can be shared, discovered, and enjoyed. Alongside the library, I’ve built this online space to celebrate books that have supported us, inspired us, or simply brought us pleasure.

At the heart of Inclusive Reads is a simple idea: through books we can nurture belonging, togetherness, and connection. This library is here for everyone: Borrow • Read • Return • Belong.
